Adams County IN – Adams County commissioners worked through a slate of infrastructure updates during their June 2 meeting, approving routine permits and hearing progress reports on several culvert and bridge projects scheduled for the coming months.
Highway engineer Nate reported that Culvert 160, located on 1100 North between 200 and 300 East, has entered its early phase of right‑of‑way preparation. Surveyors will begin marking the area so the county can acquire the land needed to widen the narrow structure in a future construction year. The culvert is structurally sound but has long been flagged for geometric issues that make it difficult for farm equipment to navigate.
He also said Bridge 163, tied to the proposed vacation of a portion of 1100 South, is ready for the next step. With preliminary work complete, the county can now schedule the required public hearing to move the process forward.
In other business, commissioners approved a NIPSCO permit allowing installation of 150 feet of 1‑inch plastic gas service line on 700 South. The line will run from a recently installed main to a nearby residence.
The board also agreed to let the county highway department assist the Town of Monroe by patching potholes in several alleys ahead of the town’s planned chip‑sealing. Monroe will pay for the oil, while the county provides the labor and equipment. Commissioners noted that no other towns have requested similar help, but said they would consider future requests case‑by‑case.
Highway superintendent Brad updated the board on a familiar trouble spot: the guardrail on 900 South near Amishville, which was struck again in a recent single‑vehicle crash. Repairs are already scheduled, and the county will bill the driver’s insurance once the work is complete.
He added that dust‑control spraying is underway across the county. Crews will apply the first coat this week and return for a second application after the material sets.
The updates reflect the steady stream of maintenance and planning that keeps the county’s 700‑mile road network functioning through the busiest months of the year.
