Adams County veterans seeking to use Indiana’s new tax deductions will have to wait a little longer, as county officials confirmed that the state has not yet released the required forms needed to process any applications. The update came during the June 9 commissioners meeting, where the Veterans Service Officer explained that counties across Indiana are facing the same delay.
According to the discussion, the state has not provided the updated deduction forms or final guidance needed for counties to begin processing claims. Without those documents, no county can accept or approve applications until at least July 1. Officials said the delay has created confusion for veterans who have heard about the new deductions but cannot yet file the paperwork.
The Veterans Service Officer noted that residents are frustrated, and many have already contacted the office seeking answers. Staff have had to repeatedly explain that the county cannot move forward until the state issues the official forms. Commissioners were told that “every county is in the same boat,” and that local offices are waiting for the same statewide guidance.
County Auditor Tony Mellencamp added that he and staff have been working closely with the Veterans Service Officer to prepare for the rollout once the state finalizes the process. He said they expect additional information to be shared at next week’s conference, where county representatives hope to receive clearer direction.
Until the state releases the required documents, veterans will need to wait before submitting applications for the new deductions.
