Decatur Police to Begin Ticketing Vehicles Parked on Sidewalks

DECATUR — With warmer weather bringing more walkers, runners, and cyclists onto neighborhood sidewalks, the Decatur Police Department is reminding residents that parking on sidewalks is not only inconsiderate — it’s against city ordinance.

In a notice to the community, the department said officers have seen an increase in vehicles blocking sidewalks throughout residential areas. Police say the issue creates hazards for children, people with disabilities, and anyone who relies on sidewalks for daily travel.

“Blocking the sidewalk with your vehicle causes severe issues for people with special mobility needs, children walking or riding their bicycles, and in general it’s rude and inconsiderate to those needing or using the sidewalk,” the department wrote.

Officers emphasized that any portion of a vehicle on a sidewalk — whether it’s the full vehicle, half of it, or just the tires — counts as a violation.

Beginning this weekend, patrol officers will start issuing tickets to vehicles found parked on sidewalks. The citation carries a small fine if paid on time.

Police said they would prefer voluntary compliance over enforcement but will ticket when necessary.

The department is asking residents to keep sidewalks open and accessible as more people are out walking in the spring and summer months.
