The Geneva Town Council on July 14 reviewed ongoing work to replace aging fire hydrants and discussed whether to authorize the purchase of another 15 units this year. The fire department reported that four of the 15 hydrants delivered last October have been installed, with additional replacements expected soon.
Council members said a town fund used for hydrant repairs, maintenance and replacement currently holds $57,521. The fire chief asked whether the council intends to continue its replacement schedule by purchasing another 15 hydrants, including the adapters used on the town’s equipment.
Utilities superintendent Matt told the council he expects more hydrants to be installed within the next couple of weeks. He said he plans to meet with a contractor familiar with the town’s water system to obtain cost estimates and determine how many hydrants could realistically be installed this year. Council members said a short special meeting may be needed once those numbers are available.
The fire department noted that maintaining a steady replacement schedule is important for emergency response, especially after last year’s hydrant delivery was delayed for several months. Council members said the fund should be able to support both installation labor and the purchase of new hydrants, depending on final costs.
Reliable hydrants are a key part of Geneva’s fire protection system, and officials said continuing the replacement plan helps ensure dependable coverage for residents and businesses.
