Monroe Enacts Burn Ban, New Traffic & Annexation Ordinances

MONROE, IN — The Town of Monroe moved forward with strict new community regulations and a local boundary adjustment following public hearings at a council meeting.

Local officials enacted a complete ban on burning trash and solid waste within town limits under Ordinance 2026-3. The measure emphasizes state compliance guidelines regarding enforcement provisions. While the new rule blocks residents from using property driveways to burn items like tires, it explicitly focuses on the disposal of garbage rather than general recreational fires.

Heavy truck traffic will also face new restrictions aimed at lowering local noise levels. Ordinance 2026-4 establishes municipal traffic regulations that formally prohibit commercial drivers from using loud engine brakes on three key roadways. The restriction applies directly to sections of West 50 South, also known as South Adams Street, alongside North Van Buren and South Van Buren streets located inside the corporate borders.

In a final regulatory action, the council approved Ordinance 2026-5 to expand the town’s official inventory of streets. The property annexation absorbs a section of the permanent right-of-way bordering South Van Buren Street into the municipality. Monroe officials had previously coordinated the infrastructure transition with county representatives, who formally consented to the territorial transfer during a prior public meeting.

The council approved all three municipal measures through individual unanimous votes following separate public hearings during the session.
