Railroad Repairs Near Fort Wayne International Airport Force Week-Long Detours

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Travelers heading to Fort Wayne International Airport this week may need extra time, as a key railroad crossing on Ferguson Road has been closed for scheduled maintenance.

Airport officials said the Ferguson Road railroad crossing will remain closed for about one week while crews complete rail‑line work. The closure affects drivers who typically approach the airport from the west and southwest, where the crossing serves as a common connector to the terminal area.

Despite the shutdown, Airport Expressway remains fully open, and passengers can still reach the airport via Ardmore Road or Airport Drive. A map shared by the airport highlights the closed crossing and the recommended detour routes.

The temporary shutdown comes as part of a broader stretch of utility and roadway activity in the area. According to Allen County project listings, lane restrictions along Ferguson Road between South Anthony Boulevard and U.S. 27 are scheduled to continue through July 11, 2026, tied to a NIPSCO gas‑main installation. While unrelated to the airport’s one‑week rail project, the overlapping work may contribute to intermittent delays throughout the summer.

Airport operations are unaffected, and no flight delays have been reported in connection with the roadwork. Officials encourage travelers to allow additional time and watch for posted detour signs when approaching the airport.
