Unfinished Roadwork Near Museum Leaves Decatur Residents Guessing

DECATUR, IN — A minor road repair on 5th Street near the museum is drawing local attention, not for its size, but for its persistence. Residents report that a rectangular cut in the pavement has remained open for over a month, despite appearing to be a routine maintenance task.

The man made pothole is located toward the shoulder of the road, is roughly the size of a Kleenex box but deep enough to pose a risk to passing traffic or pedestrians. It features clean, professional edges and sits near blue utility markings, suggesting it was part of a planned city or utility project that has since stalled.

  • The hole has been left in this state for more than four weeks.

  • Location, on 5th Street by the museum, specifically toward the shoulder of the road.

  • The cavity has been there so long it is starting to give the city’s compost site competition with all the leaves it is collecting.

While the hole is not positioned directly in the center of the driving lane, its location on the shoulder still presents a hazard for cyclists or drivers pulling over. The Decatur Herald will continue to monitor whether local crews return to finalize the patch and restore the road surface.
