The annual Independence Day fireworks show in Decatur is organized by the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, not the City of Decatur — and this year’s event will take place Thursday, July 2, due to traffic and safety concerns tied to the ongoing Wendell Macklin Bridge project.
The bridge work is an INDOT‑managed project, and its construction schedule limits traffic flow and emergency access around the riverfront on July 4.
Organizers said the earlier date avoids congestion around the construction zone and keeps emergency access open to Riverside Park. The city provides support for logistics, safety planning, and park access, but the Chamber leads the event and fundraising efforts each year.
Food and drink vendors will open at 6 p.m. at Riverside Center, with live music from 6 to 9:30 p.m. by Proud Mary, the CCR tribute band. The American Legion Color Guard will present the colors at 9:35 p.m., followed by the fireworks display at dusk over Riverside Park.
Despite the shift, organizers say the goal remains the same: a safe, well‑attended community celebration heading into the holiday weekend.
