Berne Council Approves School Resource Officer Contract, Moves Opioid Funds

The Berne City Council handled a brief agenda at its latest meeting, approving routine items and taking action on two property‑related matters. No citizens attended.

Council members approved minutes from the June 8, 2026 meeting before voting to accept claims and payroll.

The council then reviewed the annual contract for the South Adams school resource officer. Staff said the agreement contains no changes from the prior year and noted that the school board had already approved it. The city will continue invoicing the district at the daily rate listed in the contract. The council approved the contract for the upcoming school year.

Members also discussed the city’s opioid settlement fund, which receives periodic distributions from statewide litigation settlements. The city currently holds a small balance in the account. Council members noted that previous allocations in 2023 and 2025 were directed to Crossroads Community for addiction‑related services. After brief discussion, the council voted to again send the funds to Crossroads Community.

The clerk‑treasurer reported that the required annual notice regarding the city’s TIF allocation area had been filed by the June 15 deadline, confirming that revenues are not exceeding assessed value limits.

Later in the meeting, the council heard that the city received an inquiry about a vacant lot at Harrison Street/27. Staff requested approval to obtain two appraisals for the property to determine its value before any further steps are taken. The request also included appraisals for the city’s current garage buildings, which will eventually be vacated once operations move to the new facility. Council members approved obtaining the appraisals.

An update on the new city garage indicated that occupancy is still pending. A meeting between several individuals is required to resolve fire‑related items and complete final inspections, but scheduling conflicts have delayed the process.
