Courthouse Parking Concerns Surface at Commissioners Meeting

Parking around the Adams County Courthouse drew attention Tuesday after Sheriff Eric Beer told commissioners that the two‑hour parking limits posted on nearby city streets are being widely ignored. Beer said both visitors and county employees routinely park in the spaces all day, and residents have begun raising concerns.

Commissioners clarified that the county does not control those street‑side spaces. Because the streets surrounding the courthouse are within the City of Decatur’s jurisdiction, the city sets the parking rules and is responsible for enforcement. Beer noted the city no longer has a parking meter attendant to chalk tires, which may contribute to the lack of compliance.

Commissioners discussed the limited parking available for courthouse staff, particularly in the Superior Court lot, which is also used by the post office. They agreed it may be appropriate to approach the city about designating a portion of the street parking for courthouse employees to reduce congestion and improve access for residents conducting business at the courthouse.

Maintenance staff also reported that new private‑parking signs have arrived and will be installed at the entrances of all county‑owned lots, including the lot east of the courthouse.
