Decatur Considers Tougher Enforcement After Illegal Dumping Complaints

DECATUR, Ind. — City officials are weighing new enforcement measures after reports of illegal dumping at Decatur’s municipal compost site and recycling drop-off locations.

Councilman Scott Murray told the City Council that out‑of‑town residents have been leaving commercial wood waste and unflattened cardboard at the sites, including during weekend closures. He said the activity creates safety concerns and adds disposal costs for the city.

Murray said the city is looking into upgrading surveillance cameras and placing clearer warning signs at the locations. He also said the council should consider increasing fines to deter violations.

City officials said the goal is to reduce misuse of the facilities and ensure they remain available for Decatur residents.
