Electrical Issue in Auditor’s Office Briefly Draws Fire Response

A minor electrical problem in the Adams County auditor’s office on Tuesday prompted a precautionary visit from the Decatur Fire Department, briefly interrupting county business before officials cleared the building for normal use.

During the commissioners meeting, staff reported seeing smoke in the auditor’s office, initially raising concerns about a possible electrical fire. According to the discussion, the issue appeared to originate from an electrical component, and responders arrived quickly to assess the situation. Commissioners noted that the fire department inspected the office, confirmed the problem was under control, and authorized employees to return.

Officials said the incident caused no injuries and resulted in only a short disruption. The auditor’s office plans to hold a “fire sale” of damaged items at a later date, according to comments made during the meeting.

The brief interruption underscored the importance of routine safety checks in county facilities, especially in heavily used administrative offices.
