The Geneva Redevelopment Commission spent much of its June 15 meeting evaluating three competing quotes for a planned parking lot project, ultimately agreeing the proposals were too different to compare and should likely be rebid with clearer specifications.
Commission members noted wide variations in stone type, grading plans, drainage work, and the amount of detail provided in each quote. One contractor proposed adding a swale and connecting it to an existing pipe to improve drainage, while others did not specify comparable work. Members said the lack of consistent detail made it difficult to determine whether the bids reflected the same scope.
Several commissioners expressed concern that choosing a lower-cost quote without matching specifications could lead to higher long‑term maintenance costs. Others said the town should ensure the project is built to the standard it expects rather than accepting unclear proposals. The group leaned toward requesting new bids so all contractors quote the same requirements.
The commission also reviewed decisions made during a June 8 on‑site meeting at Cardinal Park. Members agreed to relocate the batting cage off the tennis court, repave the entire court, and install two pickleball courts end‑to‑end. At the basketball court, the group plans to remove the curbing and fencing, repave the surface, and keep the existing goals.
Fencing for both areas was discussed further. The town may remove fencing and bill labor, or an outside contractor may be used. Basketball court fencing cannot come down until roughly three weeks before paving. For the pickleball courts, commissioners discussed an eight‑foot fence on three sides and debated whether to fence the full 40‑foot width or a narrower layout.
Additional recreation improvements were also considered, including the possibility of adding a pitching mound and warm‑up area near the batting cage. A commission member will coordinate with South Adams Baseball to refine baseball‑related requests.
The commission voted to accept Lot 416, adjacent to Harder Park, into the TIF district, noting that planned improvements will benefit the district.
Members also reviewed ongoing work to gather prices for new tables, benches, and a gazebo. Bid packages for the gazebo and paving were sent to ABL and Marquee, while SCI reported being booked until next summer.
The meeting adjourned after closing business.
