COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol will step up impaired‑driving enforcement across the state this weekend, adding OVI checkpoints and saturation patrols as agencies prepare for heavier mid‑May traffic.
The enforcement period runs Thursday through Saturday, May 14–16, with more than 100 local departments joining the effort. Checkpoint locations will be announced the day before operations, and exact sites will be released the morning of each checkpoint.
State officials say impaired driving remains a leading factor in serious crashes. So far this year, Ohio has recorded more than 60 fatal crashes and nearly 200 serious‑injury crashes involving impaired drivers.
Drivers can expect brief license checks at designated sites and increased patrol visibility on major routes. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will also boost OVI enforcement on waterways.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, designate a sober driver and report suspected impaired driving by calling #677.
Target counties will be announced tomorrow.
