WAYNE COUNTY — Drivers heading east on I‑70 after the holiday should expect major delays as the Indiana Department of Transportation prepares for another weekend of construction.
Eastbound I‑70 will be reduced to one lane between Brick Church Road and Centerville Road from 10 p.m. Friday, May 29, through 7 a.m. Monday, June 1. INDOT warns that significant backups are likely and encourages motorists to plan alternate routes. Access to State Road 1 from eastbound I‑70 will be closed throughout the weekend. No restrictions are planned for Memorial Day weekend.
This marks the second of three planned weekend closures needed to shift traffic and continue pavement and bridge improvements along the corridor. The final weekend closure is scheduled for June 5, with the same restrictions in place.
S.R. 1 Ramp Closures Coming May 31
The ramps connecting State Road 1 to and from eastbound I‑70 are expected to close on or after Sunday, May 31, for up to 60 days. Crews will rehabilitate and reconstruct the ramp, along with drainage upgrades and resurfacing. A signed detour will direct drivers to Wilbur Wright Road to access eastbound I‑70. Those traveling from eastbound I‑70 to S.R. 1 can use Centerville Road (Exit 145).
Additional Overnight Restrictions
More lane reductions are planned next week as work continues:
Tuesday, May 26 – Thursday, May 28 (8 p.m. to 7 a.m.) • Eastbound I‑70 will be reduced to one lane between Brick Church Road and Centerville Road.
These closures may affect Adams County residents traveling toward central Indiana or Ohio, especially during peak weekend traffic. INDOT advises checking travel times before heading out and allowing extra time for detours.
